The second tool works the other way around: it takes the scores you have posted across several rounds and computes your handicap index from scratch, following the arithmetic of the World Handicap System (WHS). Together they cover the full cycle every golfer goes through — building an index from your play, then applying that index at whatever course you tee it up on next.
A golf handicap is a measure of a golfer's demonstrated playing ability, expressed as a number of strokes. Its purpose is to let players of very different abilities compete on fair and equal terms: a 20-handicap golfer and a 5-handicap golfer can play a meaningful match because the handicap system levels the field. The lower the handicap, the stronger the golfer — a "scratch" golfer has a handicap of zero, while a beginner might carry a handicap in the high 20s or 30s.
Your handicap index is a single portable number, carried to one decimal place, that represents your potential scoring ability relative to the difficulty of a standard course. It is deliberately not tied to any one course. Instead, it travels with you, and you convert it into a course-specific number every time you play somewhere new. Under the World Handicap System — adopted globally in 2020 to unify six previously separate national systems — the maximum handicap index is 54.0 for both men and women.
Because it reflects potential rather than average ability, the index is based on your better rounds, not all of them. This is a common source of confusion: your handicap index will usually be lower than your average score would suggest, because the calculation deliberately rewards your best performances.
Three numbers describe how hard a set of tees plays, and all three feed the handicap formulas:
Every set of tees on a course has its own course rating and slope rating, which is why playing from the back tees produces a higher course handicap than playing the same course from the forward tees.
The first calculator turns your handicap index into the number of strokes you receive at a particular course. The World Handicap System formula is:
Course Handicap = Handicap Index × (Slope Rating ÷ 113) + (Course Rating − Par)
The result is rounded to the nearest whole number. Take the calculator's defaults: a handicap index of 10.0, a course rating of 70, a slope rating of 121, and a par of 72. The math runs 10 × (121 ÷ 113) + (70 − 72) = 10.71 − 2 = 8.71, which rounds to a course handicap of 9. That means this golfer receives 9 strokes at this course — subtract them from the gross score to find the net score used in competition.
The slope term scales your index up or down depending on how much harder or easier the course is than a standard-difficulty layout, and the (course rating − par) term accounts for courses whose rating differs from their par. On a course where the rating is well above par, the adjustment adds strokes; where it is below par, it subtracts them.
The second calculator builds your handicap index from your posted scores. The process has three stages: compute a score differential for each round, select your best differentials, and average them with an adjustment.
Every round you post produces a score differential, which measures how well you played that round relative to the difficulty of the tees. The formula is:
Score Differential = (113 ÷ Slope Rating) × (Adjusted Score − Course Rating − PCC)
Here the PCC is the Playing Conditions Calculation, an optional adjustment (from −1 to +3) that accounts for abnormally hard or easy conditions such as strong wind or a soft, receptive course. Each differential is rounded to one decimal place. For example, a round of 85 on a course rated 70.3 with a slope of 126 gives (113 ÷ 126) × (85 − 70.3) = 0.8968 × 14.7 = 13.2.
The system does not average all your differentials — it uses only your best ones, and how many depends on how many rounds you have posted. This is the heart of why a handicap reflects potential rather than average ability. The table the World Handicap System uses is:
The extra downward adjustment for very small samples (minus 2.0 at three rounds, minus 1.0 at four and six) exists because a handicap built from only a few scores is less reliable, and the adjustment nudges it in the golfer's favor while enough data accumulates. Once you have 20 rounds in your record, the system always uses your best 8 — a rolling window that keeps your index current as you play more.
The selected differentials are averaged, the adjustment is applied, and the result is expressed to one decimal place to give your handicap index. This calculator requires at least three rounds (54 holes) of data, the minimum the World Handicap System accepts to issue an index.
You can post nine-hole scores as well as eighteen-hole scores. Enter a nine-hole score in its own column, using the course rating and slope for the nine holes you played. The calculator computes a nine-hole differential, and two nine-hole rounds are then combined into a single eighteen-hole-equivalent differential. If you enter an odd nine-hole round that cannot be paired, it is set aside rather than counted on its own. For each round, enter either an 18-hole score or a 9-hole score — never both.
Suppose a golfer posts these differentials from six eighteen-hole rounds: 13.2, 14.3, 18.3, 11.3, 17.0, and one more. With six rounds, the system takes the average of the lowest two differentials and subtracts 1.0. If the lowest two are 11.3 and 13.2, their average is 12.25, and after the −1.0 adjustment the handicap index is 11.3 (rounded to one decimal). That single number now travels with the golfer and can be converted into a course handicap at any course using the first calculator.
The handicap system is what makes golf uniquely inclusive among competitive sports. In almost any other game, a large skill gap makes a match pointless; in golf, the handicap turns that gap into a fair contest. A high-handicap player can win a net competition against a low-handicap player if they each play well relative to their own ability. This is the reason club competitions, member-guest events, and friendly wagers all revolve around handicaps.
Handicaps also give you an objective, honest measure of your own progress. Because the index is built from your best rounds and updates as you post scores, watching it fall over a season is a genuine record of improvement that no single good round can fake. It also lets you set concrete goals — breaking into single digits, reaching a 15, or getting your first handicap established.
The World Handicap System that these calculators follow was introduced in 2020 to replace six different regional systems that had grown up independently around the world, including the USGA system in the United States and the CONGU system in Great Britain and Ireland. Before then, a handicap earned in one country did not translate cleanly to another, and the formulas for computing it differed in meaningful ways. The unified WHS means a golfer's index is now calculated the same way everywhere and is recognized internationally, so you can carry a single number to a course on the other side of the globe and receive a fair allowance. This calculator implements the core WHS arithmetic — the score differential formula, the differential-selection table, and the course handicap conversion — so the numbers it produces line up with how an official handicap service would compute them.

It depends on your goals, but a handicap in the single digits is generally considered very good, and the average male handicap sits in the mid-teens while the average female handicap is somewhat higher. A "scratch" golfer has a handicap of 0, and the WHS maximum is 54.0.
Slope rating measures how much harder a course plays for an average (bogey) golfer than for a scratch golfer. It ranges from 55 to 155, with 113 being standard difficulty. A higher slope means the course is relatively harder for higher-handicap players, so it increases their course handicap more.
Because the index is based on your best differentials, not all of them. It measures your potential ability — what you are capable of shooting on a good day — rather than your typical or average performance, so it will usually be lower than your scoring average suggests.
The PCC is a daily adjustment, ranging from −1 to +3, that accounts for abnormal playing conditions such as strong wind or a very soft course. It is applied within the score differential formula. If conditions were normal, it is 0, and you can leave the field blank.
