Tile Calculator: How Many Tiles and Boxes You Really Need

The tile calculator answers the question every tiling project starts with: how many tiles do I need to buy? Give it the size of a single tile, the area you want to cover, and the width of the grout gap between tiles, and it returns the exact number of tiles, the number of boxes, the total area, and a recommended amount to buy once you factor in cutting and waste. Add a price and it turns all of that into a budget.

Ordering the right quantity matters more than it first appears. Buy too few and you risk a mid-job trip to the store — or worse, discovering that your batch is discontinued or that a new batch has a slightly different shade. Buy far too many and you have tied up money in boxes that sit in the garage for years. Getting the number right, with a sensible waste allowance built in, is the single most useful thing you can do before a tiling project begins.

How the Calculator Works

The math behind tiling is simple in principle but easy to get wrong by hand, mostly because of the grout gap. The calculator works in these steps:

  • It adds the gap to the tile. Each tile occupies its own size plus the grout line around it. A 12 × 12 inch tile with a 0.25 inch gap effectively takes up a 12.25 × 12.25 inch footprint on the floor.
  • It finds the area of that footprint. Multiplying the gapped length by the gapped width gives the true area one tile covers, grout included.
  • It divides the total area by the tile footprint. The area you want to cover, divided by the area one tile occupies, gives the number of tiles — rounded up, because you cannot buy a fraction of a tile.
  • It works out boxes. If you enter how many tiles come in a box, it divides and rounds up to the next whole box.
  • It adds a waste allowance. On top of the exact figure it shows what 5% and 10% more works out to, in both tiles and boxes.

The formula, in one line, is: tiles = total area ÷ [(tile length + gap) × (tile width + gap)], rounded up. Everything else — boxes, waste, and cost — flows from that number.

Entering the Area to Cover

There are two ways to tell the calculator how big your space is, selected with the radio buttons:

Use Dimensions is the default. Enter the length and width of the room or wall and the calculator multiplies them to get the area. This is the right choice for a simple rectangular space where you can measure the two sides directly. Each dimension has its own unit, so you can mix feet and meters if you need to.

Use Total Area lets you enter the area directly when you already know it — for example, if you calculated an irregular room by breaking it into pieces, or if a floor plan lists the square footage. Choose your area unit (square feet, square meters, square yards, square inches, or square centimeters) and enter the number.

Gap Size and Grout

Floor and wall tiles are almost always installed with a small gap between them, filled with grout. These grout lines — sometimes called grout spacing or joints — exist for good reasons, and the gap size directly affects how many tiles you need.

Tiles are rarely perfectly uniform. Even machine-made tiles vary slightly in size and shape, and installing them edge-to-edge with no gap would make those inconsistencies obvious and leave no room for the tiles to sit squarely. The grout gap absorbs that variation and gives the finished surface a clean, deliberate look. Grout is a form of cement-based filler, and typical gaps range from about one-sixteenth of an inch up to half an inch, depending on the tile.

Several factors drive the gap you choose:

  • Tile uniformity. Rectified tiles — ones that have been machined to precise, uniform edges — can be set with very small gaps, sometimes as little as 1/16 inch. Non-rectified tiles need wider gaps to hide their size variation.
  • Tile material. Precisely cut materials like porcelain and granite tolerate smaller gaps; handmade, natural stone, and rustic tiles usually call for wider ones.
  • Tile size. Large-format tiles often use slightly wider gaps to accommodate any bowing across their span; small tiles and mosaics can use very fine lines.
  • Look and maintenance. Narrow grout lines look more seamless but are harder to keep straight during installation; wider lines are more forgiving and easier to work with, but leave more grout to clean over time.

Because the gap is added around every tile, changing it changes your count. A wider gap means each tile covers more effective area, so you need fewer tiles; a narrower gap means more tiles. The calculator handles this automatically — and it even accepts a negative gap for the rare case of overlapping materials, which increases the number of pieces needed.

Understanding the Results

After you calculate, the results panel reports several figures:

  • Tiles Needed — the exact number of tiles to cover the area, rounded up to a whole tile.
  • Boxes Needed — if you entered a box size, how many full boxes that works out to, rounded up.
  • Total Area — when you use dimensions, the area those dimensions represent, shown in the same unit as your length.
  • Purchase 5% – 10% more — a recommended buying range that builds in a waste allowance, expressed in both tiles and boxes.
  • Cost — if you entered a price, the total for the exact quantity plus the cost of buying 5–10% more.

Why You Should Always Buy Extra

The recommendation to purchase 5–10% more than the exact number is not padding for its own sake — it reflects the realities of an actual installation:

  • Cutting. Tiles at the edges of a room, around door frames, pipes, and corners have to be cut to fit, and the offcuts usually cannot be reused. Every cut tile is effectively a partial waste.
  • Breakage. Tiles chip and crack during handling, cutting, and setting. A certain fraction simply will not survive to the floor.
  • Mistakes. A miscut, a tile set in the wrong place before the adhesive skins over, a pattern that does not line up — these happen even to professionals.
  • Future repairs. This is the one most people forget. If a tile cracks years later, having a few originals from the same batch means an invisible repair. Dye lots vary between production runs, so a replacement bought later rarely matches exactly.

How much extra depends on your layout. For a straight, grid layout in a simple rectangular room, 5–10% is usually plenty. For diagonal layouts, herringbone, or other patterns with many angled cuts, or for rooms with lots of corners, alcoves, and obstacles, lean toward 10–15% or more. Larger tiles also waste more per cut than small ones, because each ruined tile represents more area.

Estimating Cost

  • Per tile — the calculator multiplies by the number of tiles.
  • Per box — it multiplies by the number of boxes.
  • Per square foot, square meter, square yard, square inch, or square centimeter — it multiplies by the area, which is how many tiles are actually sold and quoted.

When you price per tile or per box, the calculator also shows what the 5–10% waste buffer costs, so you can budget for the quantity you will actually buy rather than the bare minimum. Remember that the tile itself is only part of a tiling budget: grout, thin-set mortar or adhesive, spacers, trim pieces, sealer, and tools all add to the real cost, as does labor if you are hiring the work out. How to Measure for Tile

Accurate measurement is where a good tile estimate begins. A few practical pointers:

  • Measure the actual space, not the nominal one. A "12-foot" room is rarely exactly 12 feet. Measure each wall, and measure in more than one place — rooms are seldom perfectly square.
  • Break complex rooms into rectangles. Measure each rectangle, calculate it, and add them up. Subtract large permanent fixtures you will not tile around, such as a kitchen island or a built-in cabinet, but do not bother subtracting small ones.
  • For walls, measure height and width and subtract large openings like windows and doors. For a backsplash, measure the run and the height between counter and cabinets.
  • Use the tile's nominal size unless the manufacturer specifies otherwise — a tile sold as 12 × 12 is designed to work on a 12-inch grid with its intended grout line, and the calculator's gap field accounts for the spacing.
  • Check the box. Tile boxes list how many pieces they contain and how much area they cover; use those figures to confirm your order.

Common Tile Sizes and Types

Tiles come in a wide range of sizes and materials, and both influence your project. Common floor tile sizes include 12 × 12, 18 × 18, and 24 × 24 inches, along with rectangular "plank" tiles that mimic wood. Wall and subway tiles are often smaller — 3 × 6 inches is the classic subway format — while mosaics come in sheets of tiny tiles.

The main materials each have their own character:

  • Ceramic — affordable, easy to cut, and available in countless styles; well suited to walls and light-to-moderate floor traffic.
  • Porcelain — denser and harder than ceramic, more water-resistant, and durable enough for heavy floor use and outdoor settings; often rectified for tight grout lines.
  • Natural stone — marble, granite, travertine, and slate offer unique looks but need sealing and usually wider, more forgiving grout lines.
  • Glass — popular for backsplashes and accents; reflective and striking but requires careful cutting.

Whatever the size or material, the calculation is the same: the calculator only needs the dimensions of one tile and the gap around it. That makes it equally at home estimating tiny mosaics or large-format slabs.

Tips for a Successful Tiling Project

  • Buy it all at once. Order your full quantity, including the waste allowance, in a single purchase so every tile comes from the same dye lot and shade.
  • Keep the spares. Store the leftover tiles from your order. A handful of matching originals is worth far more than a close-but-not-quite replacement years later.
  • Dry-lay first. Before spreading any adhesive, lay out a row of tiles with spacers to check your pattern, plan your cuts, and avoid awkward thin slivers at the edges.
  • Plan the layout around sight lines. Center the pattern so cut tiles fall at less visible edges, and keep full tiles where the eye lands first.
  • Account for the pattern. Diagonal and herringbone layouts look great but generate more waste; increase your allowance accordingly.
  • Don't forget the extras. Order enough grout, adhesive, spacers, and trim at the same time, and factor sealer into stone and some porcelain jobs.
