Here v is walking speed in kilometers per hour, and A, B, C, D are coefficients specific to the slope. For level ground (0% grade) the equation is:

Each grade from −5% to +5% has its own set of coefficients — walking uphill raises the constant and lifts the whole curve, while walking downhill lowers it. Because the equation gives calories per kilogram per hour, the result scales directly with your weight and with how long you walk. The tool converts every input into these base units (kilograms, kilometers per hour, and hours) before applying the formula, so you can enter pounds, miles, minutes, or miles per hour and still get the correct answer.
Distance, time, and speed are locked together by a simple relationship: speed = distance ÷ time. That is why you only need to enter two of the three — the calculator derives the missing one automatically. If you know you walked 5 km in 1 hour, it works out a speed of 5 km/h. If you know you walked at 6 km/h for 30 minutes, it works out a distance of 3 km. The calorie formula depends on speed and time, so once any two of the three values are known, everything else follows.
Alongside calories, the calculator reports two extra figures. The first is the number of steps your walk represents, found by dividing the distance by your stride length. Because men and women have different average stride lengths, the tool uses about 0.762 m (2.5 ft) per step for men and about 0.67 m (2.2 ft) per step for women. The second figure is the weight lost, which is simply the calories burned divided by 7,700 — the widely used estimate for the number of kilocalories stored in one kilogram of body fat (roughly 3,500 kcal per pound). So burning 770 kcal corresponds to about 0.1 kg of fat. Remember that this is a theoretical equivalent; real weight change also depends on what and how much you eat.
Suppose a person weighs 75 kg and walks 5 km in 1 hour on level ground (0% slope). Their speed is 5 km/h. Plugging into the level-ground equation:

That works out to about 306.6 kilocalories, which corresponds to roughly 39.8 g of body fat and about 6,562 steps for a man of that stride. In the calculator, moving from 0% to +5% for a 75 kg person walking 5 km at 5 km/h lifts the burn from about 307 to about 413 kcal — an increase of more than a third for the same distance and time. Downhill walking, on the other hand, is gentler on the energy system but can be tougher on the knees, since the muscles work eccentrically to control the descent.
The famous "10,000 steps a day" target is a useful, motivating round number, though it originated as a marketing slogan rather than a strict medical prescription.
